As a PDF ‘services’ person who recently parachuted down into the dungeons of server software, I can report by now that there are different monsters down here. In fact, it’s an entirely new level!
A few of the thoughts that come bubbling to the surface:
- There’s nothing new under the sun; computers and programming haven’t really changed very much in 40 years.
- Server software is as besotted by fads (.NET, XML, threading, etc, etc) as the fashion industry, and to precisely the same purpose.
- Vital decisions about mission-critical technology are routinely turned over to line developers who aren’t trained or equipped to deliver well-considered outcomes for the enterprise as a whole.
- 80% of server software purchased is never implemented.
More observations as the red pill continues to take effect…
